Brown Family Farm

In 1865 after the Civil War ended, Byron C. Brown founded Brown Family Farm after he and his mother were emancipated from the Oakley Grove Plantation in Warren County. Byron grew commodity crops, timber, and raised livestock until he died in 1931. His son, Grover Brown continued to cultivate grains and raise livestock, and also started a peach orchard in 1935. His son, Rev. Dr. Arthur A. Brown raised livestock, grew vegetables, grain and tobacco until he retired in 2003. Today, Patrick Brown runs the farm while also working an off-farm job. They recently stopped farming tobacco and are now focused on growing hemp for fiber and CBD oil, and also have a renewed focus on regenerative agricultural practices to heal the environment and people. Brown Family Farms has been using organic practices in their vegetable production since 2016 and is planning to get certified soon.  In the spring of 2021, Patrick also bought the Oakley Grove Plantation where his ancestors were slaves. He plans to use the land for agritourism and venue rentals, as well as hosting family gatherings.

Patrick is also a leader in the black farming community. In October 2019, he was featured as the keynote speaker for a panel called “Land of Opportunity in Black Agribusiness” at the annual Black Wall Street conference for entrepreneurs focused on the intersection of content, connections, and culture in Durham, NC. In January 2020, Patrick was featured on The Black Equity Network podcast panel “Dear Black Farmers” Episode 266. In 2020 Patrick and Brown Family Farms were featured in the September issue of Business View Magazine. In May 2021 Patrick was one of the keynote speakers at the 9th annual Vance Granville small business summit for agriculture alternatives and legacy farms seminar. In November 2021 Patrick was the Keynote Speaker at the 31st Annual National Black Farmers Conference and also in November 2021 Patrick was a guest speaker at the 36th Annual Sustainable Agriculture conference.
