Cornmeal, "Bloody Butcher" | Deep Roots Milling

1 lb

5 left

"Bloody Butcher" corn is an heirloom variety that has been grown in Appalachia since at least as early as the mid-1800s. Its exact origins are unknown, but it was also grown in Tennessee, West Virginia, and North Carolina. Small family farms have been diligently saving its seed generation after generation. It is prized for its distinctive beautiful color and unique flavor.

Deep Roots Milling

Deep Roots Milling is employee owned and operated. We mill-to-order one week every month and offer a variety of flour and meal, bolted and unbolted. Regionally grown grains, quality milling and working as a direct link between farmers and bakers are our primary concerns. All products are milled within the walls of historic Woodson's Mill in Lowesville, VA. We are driven by water, making flour with purpose. Woodson’s Mill was originally built in the 1790’s and has been in continual operation throughout the majority of its history. For much of America’s history, mills like Woodson’s dotted the landscape and served vital community roles. However, with the commercialization of the modern food system, these country mills could not compete and most were abandoned and left to fall apart. Woodson’s Mill is one of the last of these gems and we are excited to give it new life.
